Here’s to Librarians.

I haven’t written in a while, and while there are lots of reasons (well, really one: I got busy.) I felt a tug at me to write this post for days. So here goes:

I saw a post on Facebook recently that was a cheer to teachers in all different kinds of circumstances. With some schools in person, others hybrid, and others virtual, as a field, all of us that work in schools are experiencing incredible shifts in our roles right now and how we best support students. This is hard work. We are all in different places and situations, and yet the struggle is real for all of us in this “new normal.”

Here’s to the librarians whose positions have been cut to part-time but are still expected to perform their normal full-time work.

Here’s to the librarians who have been re-assigned as classroom teachers this year.

Here’s to the librarians who are a classroom teacher part time while also juggling being the librarian, too.

Here’s to the librarians who retired at the end of last year.

Here’s to the librarians who took retirement early because they were being asked to go into unsafe library spaces.

Here’s to the librarians who can’t retire yet but want to.

Here’s to the librarians who have no budget but are being asked to support students and staff with ebooks and databases.

Here’s to the librarians who are trying to figure out all the details about curbside pickup.

Here’s to the librarians coordinating with buses doing meal-drop offs to also drop off library books to students.

Here’s to the librarians figuring out how to safely collect book returns.

Here’s to the librarians who are in charge of laptops at their school AND curbside pickup.

Here’s to the librarians who are completely virtual in an area where internet is spotty or hard to come by.

Here’s to the librarians whose internet goes out in the middle of a read aloud.

Here’s to the librarians who have to go to school in-person but have an at-risk family member.

Here’s to the librarians who need to be virtual for health reasons but their entire school is in-person. .

Here’s to the librarians who are on evaluation this year (like me).

Here’s to the librarians who stay up late making resource lists and how-to videos.

Here’s to the librarians who are entering classrooms each day to drop off books to students and teach lessons.

Here’s to the librarians who are welcoming students into their library space each day and sanitizing when they leave.

Here’s to the librarians who sanitize their own space with their own supplies.

Here’s to the librarians planning orientation for hybrid classes.

Here’s to the librarians planning orientation for virtual classes.

Here’s to the librarians planning orientation for in-person classes, but students can’t enter the library space.

Here’s to the librarians hosting book clubs and other programming for students.

Here’s to the librarians who plan fun programming and no students show up.

Here’s to the librarians who are the only librarian in their district.

Here’s to the librarians who are quarantining because a student or staff member tested positive.

Here’s to the librarians who have tested positive.

Here’s to the librarians who bury themselves in books to escape.

Here’s to the librarians who can’t concentrate enough to read anything.

Here’s to the librarians who want to collaborate with teachers, and everyone is too busy or overwhelmed to say yes.

Here’s to the librarians who are inundated with teacher collaboration requests and can’t keep up.

Here’s to the librarians who want to collaborate but struggle with using technology.

Here’s to the librarians who field copyright questions about online read alouds.

Here’s to the librarians who had to refresh themselves on copyright law.

Here’s to the librarians who have a principal who values libraries and librarians.

Here’s to the librarians who don’t.

Here’s to all of us, supporting students and staff in every way we can.

Here’s to you.
